Wedding Photographer Dorset – Smedmore House

Wedding Photography at Smedmore House

A Stunning 18th Century privately owned Country House on the Jurassic Coast.

With its Georgian façade, walled gardens and breathtaking sea views, Smedmore House is a unique venue in Dorset for weddings.

It is recorded in A Survey of Dorsetshire in about 1620 as “ a little newe house and beautified with pleasant gardens”. The original Jacobean house was given a Queen Anne elevation to the south west in 1700 and twin bows on the north west front in 1760. In Country Life in 1935, Arthur Oswald described it as “ a charming example of vernacular work in the time of Wren”. In 1953 A L Rowse called Smedmore “very virginal and lovely, waiting at the end of the road beyond which there is no further. It is a dream of a place…”. In the words of historian and biographer Lord David Cecil, “Smedmore combines in a very special way the charms of the homely and the romantic” the rooms “are in the highest degree welcoming and reassuring…. They invite the visitor to relax…..the windows let in the romance of the Purbeck hills and the open sea with, on the south west, a pretty, pensive garden”. At the bottom of the main walled garden is a walk through woods and fields, past sphinxes , urns and obelisks, down to Kimmeridge Bay.

Kimmeridge Bay is famous for swimming, diving, surfing, wind-surfing and fossil hunting. It is overlooked by Clavell’s Tower, the inspiration for P.D.James’s novel The Black Tower (1975).
